Chapter 1

Just like I promised the many years ago,
I’ve finally arrived at the depot.
I wouldn’t expect you to be here still,
but make of my arrival what you will.
The grand iron wheels are seized in rust.
The passenger benches drenched in dust.

The coat I carry, the one I wore when we met,
paired with the hat concealing my regret.
The station’s clock has lost its hands,
like Ozymandias with his lands.
I see the steel rails fading out of sight
into a long, unmoving sort of night.

You are not here, and time has won the race;
choices beat by the hard empty space.
The whistle blows no more upon the track–
big wheels turn, but never turn us back.
But in the distance, I can hear a ringing phone.
Big wheels, if you can, carry my heart home.
